Sign of the month-Leo

Personality Traits

Leo is the sign of the Sun, the central heart of the solar system, and majestic ruler of the heavens. In ancient times the Sun came to its full glory and reached the height of its annual ascent as it joined the stars in the constellation of the Lion. Ever since, lions have been portrayed in art, myth, and iconography as powerful symbols of solar strength, supremacy, glory, light, and brilliance.

Widespread hero myths, such as those of Gilgamesh, Oedipus, Orion, Hercules or Samson, bear tales of wrestling with the lion; all have been identified as calendar myths that relate to the story of the sun's journey through the sky. As the hero does battle with the lion, he absorbs the solar qualities and takes them as his own. In the widely reported Greek myth, Leo is said to commemorate the fierce Nemean Lion, brother of the sphinx, which Hercules must defeat in the first of his trials. The Nemean lion is a symbol of the fierce and devastating summer heat that ravishes the land. No weapon, stone, club or instrument made of iron or bronze can penetrate its skin; it is an 'impossible' task, unyielding to cunning, craft or speed. Hercules can only succeed by summoning the entire strength of his being, the full magnitude of his inner will and fixed, determined spirit. His conquest becomes a testimony to the power of mind over matter, the individual's capacity to move heaven and earth and attain the unattainable through the process of connecting with the heart of one's being and giving full reign to the creative force that resides, mainly dormant, within.

As the sign of the Sun, Leo is characterised by courage, an invincible attitude, and the gift of unsuppressed will to rise above the ordinary. Anatomically, Leo has rulership over the heart and blood; symbolically, it also signifies the metaphorical parallels that see the heart as the centre of strength and vitality, and the 'blood raising' process as one that allows us to engage in battles - moral, physical, territorial or political - free from the restraints of logical recognition of consequences or instinctive awareness of limitations. The word 'courage' derives from the Latin word for the heart, Cor, and literally means 'to take heart' (and therefore overcome one's fears). In the 'blood raising' process we become bigger, more powerful, more conscious and more capable than we normally consider ourselves to be, and Leos have an easy ability to take on this grander persona whenever they feel the need to assert qualities of superiority.

The Sun is a natural symbol for power and command. Traditionally, the Sun represents the captain, the boss, the leader or the king. In Leo the lion, the 'king of the beasts', the theme of majestic grandeur is never far from the observable traits. Put simply, whatever opinions anyone else may have on the matter, a Leo perceives him- or herself as the royal center of activity. Lions are territorial animals and care little about what happens outside the boundaries of their own terrain; similarly, all Leos will have an area that they view as 'their kingdom' - their rightful place to shine where they can become the nucleus that directs, organizes and orchestrates. To some it is the domestic environment; to others, a hobby or intellectual pursuit; others yet may find it in a wider professional or political arena. Wherever this 'kingdom' exists, a Leo will take great pride and pleasure in being viewed as someone to look up to. Treat them with respect, and they demonstrate that well-earned reputation for a broad-minded, enthusiastic and magnanimous disposition.

However, should a Leo have cause to view another as a predator, then never was a creature more sensitive or responsive to assumed slights and imagined threats. Open-minded tolerance and relaxed confidence fall away as ego-driven urges swing into gear. A Leo as an adversary makes a bloody-minded opponent and the dominating qualities of this sign are such that they rarely feel appeased with victory unless it involves the total annihilation of the threat. Leos are well known for sensitivity to their own emotions, and yet they are far less empathetic to the thoughts and feelings of others; hence this sign has one of the most fearsome reputations amongst the zodiac signs for exhibiting brutal or extreme behaviour. Ancient astrologers referred to Leo as 'bestial', meaning responsive to primordial instincts rather than higher reasoning; and 'feral' because it was considered capable of savage and ferociously destructive traits. This is the darker side of the Leo. It is rarely explored in sun-sign columns that dwell on the warmth, vitality, and sunshine-filled aura that Leos generally demonstrate when they are not being pushed to the limits of their behaviour. Other negative traits include a tendency towards being dogmatic, a bullying mentality, self-conceit, vanity, and a snobbish, patronizing disposition.

Leo's element is fire and its nature is hot and dry. Fire types are characterised by spontaneity; swift, intuitive responses; vivacious and infectious ways of relating to others, and high energy levels. They are attracted to passion, drama and crave attention. This latter is particularly evident in Leos, who revel in positions that draw attention to them; where it is not forthcoming they will make conscious and unconscious attempts to foster it though the use of strong, vivid colours, dramatic gestures and overblown expressions.

Leo is a fixed sign and therefore the propensity for hasty action is moderated. Leos are unlikely to respond to every trifling event and generally take time to let their opinions form, during the process of which many minor irritations resolve themselves. They are often referred to as simple-minded, meaning that they tend to relate to things exactly as they are expressed and see them just as they appear on the surface. Communication should be plain, simple and direct, though literary types may reveal a signature of flamboyance in rich and colourful, artistic expressions.

Leos don't make a habit of looking for deeper meanings, neither do they have a very detailed eye, but tend to appreciate things from the broader perspective. This gives them a talent for seeing the whole picture and suits their leadership skills in that they have breadth of vision and a ready grasp of the overall shape of things. But they are out of their depth when dealing with the essential detailed practicalities that make the vision work and often rely upon the co-operation and support of more discerning types to ensure that particulars are not overlooked.

Leos are commonly reported as being opposed to pettiness, and they seem to possess an optimistic belief that everything will work itself out in the fullness of time. Whilst a conviction that sweet providence is taking care of them is generally a blessing that sustains their confidence, and such buoyancy usually does foster success, this attitude can lead to major problems, especially when their disinterest in practical details combines with their leaning towards extravagance and exaggerated plans. Limitations of all sorts are alien to the Leo nature; and many Leos are poor at budgeting themselves or restricting their financial output to what they can actually afford. They are prone to ostentatious financial commitments and material indulgences that incline them to live at the edge of their means if not beyond. Periods when balancing the books is necessary can be a very depressing time for Leos; this often comes in the form of a crisis that can no longer be ignored. The importance of self-limitation is a lesson that ought to be driven home to all young Leos, but their lack of natural talent in this area is part of the downside of having a colourful attitude towards living life to the fullest.

As lovers and partners Leos are a strange mix of contradictory traits. They are known for being expressive, extravagant and warm with their affections, but equally they have a self-obsessed quality that can become a point of conflict in one-to-one relationships based on a platform of mutual equality. They can go through periods of excluding the partner, being totally absorbed in their own interests, and then make grand romantic gestures, becoming overwhelming charming for a while in an effort to make up for their neglect. Leos are usually loyal and straightforward with their emotions, striving for stability; they dislike subtle game playing and put great store by honesty and openness. However, traditionally, the sign is not a favourable one for marriage because Leos basically have a problem with sharing their field and maintain rigid, inflexible views on the essential way that life should be. Successful relationships can occur with partners that are more flexible in their approach, able to tolerate periods of exclusion in exchange for lots of fuss and attention from time to time, and especially if that partner is malleable enough to maintain independent interests whilst helping to support the Leo in mundane practicalities.

There is usually no shortage of romantic candidates drawn to their vibrant and charismatic appeal and young love can be intensely passionate. Like all the fire signs, Leos are idealistic and don't hold back from expressing their passion. They are extremely responsive to romantic attention, which is very gratifying to their ever-hungry ego, and as such they can suffer from rash romantic liaisons that are impetuous and unsuitable on a long term basis.
All of the sun signs show us the traits that we can use to connect with a powerful force that makes us distinguished individuals, capable of rising above our habitual fears. The faults of the Leo are no more than the extremes of a nature that recognizes this most easily of all. Where the Sun shines, truth, nobility and pure-penetrating vitality can be found. Used consciously, Leo represents an elemental power that is healing, light-bringing, direct, joyous and strong. We simply need to remember that the lion can act like a pussy-cat at times, but it in its own heart it is always a magnificent creature that can never be fully tamed or manipulated against its will.

Full Moon in Aquarius, July 25 at 9:37 pm EDT

This is a perfect time to meditate on joy, abundance, and world peace. The Sun and Moon are Trine/Sextile the Uranus, Jupiter, Saturn Opposition. The fifth Uranus Saturn Opposition becomes exact hours after the Full Moon. We will finally act now to move beyond theory and discussion of the need for change, now we act. Mercury (finite thinking) Opposes Neptune (god of the infinite) showing we are receiving information from higher sources. We are eliminating labels, categories, and normal divisions in our thinking; we find solutions through discovery and innovation.

We can experience much tension as there is lots of energy that has no place to go. We can adjust to the pace of the day if we are able to keep the world circumstances in context. Meditation brings a sense of peace and helps ease the tension in the world.

The Moon in cool collective Aquarius opposes the Sun in hot individualistic Leo provoking questions about sharing and cooperation. What's the appropriate balance between what's good for the individual and what's good for society? How does the expression of one person work within the context of a group? The divide between private interests and public concerns represented by this lunation is bridged by a trine to the Moon from Saturn in Libra, providing a sense of fair play and flexibility to gracefully move from one side to the other.

Are you hanging with the right crowd? Is the group supportive to you? Are you still making individual choices along the way working in the organization? Themes involving friendships, groups or group consciousness and organizations will be on the radar during the Full Moon in Aquarius at 3 degrees on July 25th, 2010. Certainly during a full moon phase, that which was kept in the dark is brought out to the light and anything buried tension could bubble out.

As a possibility, this could mean that if you are in involved with a group, an important piece of information or insight becomes available thereby putting you at a crossroads or deciding the next step. If there are shake ups, see what it is you need to understand from them and if something needs to be altered so there is progress made. With enough care and dedication to working through the snags and issues, there is potential for shifts and or breakthroughs. Leading up to the full moon are some interesting and potentially intense energies so allow for plenty of room to move through things as they arise. Try not to take on too much.

Another example is; if you joined a group with similar interests and liked the idea of the group and its purpose in the past. Today, it is time to review things. Ask for inner guidance, to see if being a part of this group today is truly your highest good. Or is it time to make a change? It is good from time to time t o reflect and ensure that you are not in auto-pilot mode and just going along with decisions of the group or blindly following the choices the group makes. Allow your Soul to guided you here, be more conscious in making a choice(s) which best serves your path and you will find that you are flowing with the currents of change.

Remember that this Full Moon in Aquarius occurs at a significant point in the overall landscape of the energies aligning and unfolding. Jupiter in Aries just went into (retrograde) phase making a tense square aspect to transiting Pluto in Capricorn (retrograde), Saturn re-enters the sign of Libra. And finally Saturn/Uranus in Aries (now retrograde) opposition makes it final sighting as the fifth of the series of aspects to each other beginning in Virgo/Pisces axis. And now Saturn/Uranus activating the Libra/Aries axis.

Also, a must “do” with the Saturn/Uranus opposition; this is the time to finalize the balance between structure, form and stability with innovation, spontaneity and freedom. The key is to blend both ancient wisdom and modern or futuristic drive for change so there is a harmony. We may just have to let go of pre-conceived ideas or expectations in favor of what serves our overall highest good and evolution. It can be a tremendous opening of freedom or liberation as well as bring gems of accomplishment into our lives

Even though each person experiences the Lunar phases differently depending on their natal chart and other factors, everyone will be experiencing something whether it is subtle or creating large bursts of awareness. This Full Moon in Aquarius happens at 3 degrees. The sensitive points would be 0-6 degrees for the signs of Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio and Taurus.

The Moon making a trine aspect to Saturn in Libra eases this lunar transition just before the Full Moon tonight. We should all begin to feel a sense of accomplishment and relief just before the Moon is full. This is perfect for releasing.

With the Full Moon in Aquarius at 9:37 p.m. EDT we have just gone through a month of eclipses and now the big shifts around family and our childhood should be visible to us. If you do not feel this or did not notice anything shift in your life then this Full Moon may be what can activate it for you.

With a Full Moon there can be an internal battle that can lead to indecisiveness and a lack of action. Both the Sun and the Moon are in fixed signs and we are being told that we need to let go old hurts and wounds. View your source of pain, your source of anger with an intellectual eye. Remove the emotional responses from your internal dialog. Once resolved you will have great drive to move forward and achieve your life goals.

But for now, with the Full Moon, work on releasing old issues, write them down and burn them after the Moon is full. The chart for this Full Moon is full of discord and the need for adjustments, the need to forgive ourselves, and others; to put our efforts into letting go of petty past issues.

We presently have a wonderful opportunity, with the chart of the Full Moon, to totally clear and release whatever issue the eclipses have brought up for you. Who wouldn’t want that? Who doesn’t want to release the burdens of the past? Who wouldn’t want to lighten their load and not have to carry so much of a burden into our future? I know I know I prefer to travel light! Focus your time over the next two weeks on releasing the things that came up for you over the month of eclipses. Use the innovative energy of this Aquarius Moon to come up with new solutions to clear away the old, see the bright future in front of you, and avoid excessive detachment if it has become part of your life. Our whole attitudes toward life, friends and even humanitarian endeavors can change us beyond our wildest dreams. This is the promise of this Full Moon.

Total Solar Eclipse (New Moon) July 11, 19:24 Cancer (3:40 pm PDT)

This week's Solar Eclipse falls on Sunday at 19 degrees Cancer. Its effects will be rather like a turbo-charged New Moon. Solar Eclipses bring new situations and conditions into one's life. They often coincide with beginnings and endings, and will push you to take the next step on your evolutionary path, whether you are ready for it or not. In the sign of Cancer, issues that arise may involve family members or patterns that were developed during childhood. Changes to your home or family dynamics may occur as a result. Over this week think about taking a reduced schedule so you can handle any issues that might arise.

On the 11th we are bestowed with a creative flow and a deep feeling of inner connection that will serve us well at the New Moon in Cancer. This New Moon is a total solar eclipse, but a nice aspect to Mars helps to energize and focus making it easier clarify our desires and intentions.

The New Moon in Cancer is focused in the realm of emotion - Cancer after all is ruled by the Moon and shares its fluid and changeable mood and flow of feelings. Any areas of insecurity that linger in our psyche could arise to the surface to be healed at this time and we may receive a powerful shot of wisdom regarding the way in which we achieve balance in our life - something that requires the healing and release of old hurts and painful judgments.

Chiron, traveling retrograde, will move from Pisces back into Aquarius where it will remain until the beginning of 2011. This gives us an opportunity to bring greater healing through the energy fields through which we attain a higher level of intelligence and awareness. Once Chiron moves fully into Pisces, the focus will change from spiritual intelligence to a deeper and more personal inner connection to life.

Saturn also changes signs when on the 21st it re-enters Libra after completing its journey through Virgo. In Libra, Saturn brings its tests and challenges into the realm of the way we relate to others and how well we create balance and harmony in our lives. Saturn will remain in Libra until October of 2012, so we have a while to get this right.

The Sabian Symbol of the New Moon at 20 degrees Cancer gives us this image:

A GROUP OF SERENDADERS MAKE MERRY IN A VENETIAN GONDOLA

This is a celebratory Moon that promotes good times with those we love. I think it also suggests that we get out on the water!
This solar eclipse, (occurring at the south node), suggests a new chapter for something that is already in play. At 19 Cancer, it can be especially influential for those born on July 11, Oct 12, Jan 9, or April 9; (it can also produce significant impact if it makes a dynamic aspect to your personal chart.) Watch for something or someone of influence from your past (from this life or another lifetime) to resurface. Igniting the Cancer/Capricorn axis, family members and family dynamics are likely to take the main spotlight. (Transitions can occur.) The Cancer/Capricorn axis also puts the spotlight on security needs and measures, (private and personal; public, professional; social/political.) It is an important time of inner world and outer world restructuring. The eclipse can prompt an experiential review of old, outworn and limiting behaviours, and in so doing, brings an opportunity to release them.

Sign of the Month; Cancer

June 22-July 22

As the sign of the Crab, the psychological traits of Cancer are characterised by the image of a creature with a tough, hardened shell protecting a soft and vulnerable centre. Cancer is ruled by the Moon and belongs to the element of water. Unlike most signs, which share their planetary rulers, Cancer claims exclusive rights to the Moon, both sign and planetary ruler termed 'cold and moist' in nature. Understanding the essence of that phrase reveals a lot about the complex sensitivity that lies beneath the Cancerian's thick, crustaceous shell.

In ancient astrology the condition of 'moistness' was viewed as the capacity to release emotions and connect with other beings. Moisture blurs the boundaries that define us as distinct individuals, allowing empathy, sympathy and a shared experience of personal or collective events. The act of sharing emotions represents an important aspect of forming bonds and unions, so moisture is also a creative condition, which forms the basis of love, fertility and reproduction. When we become too emotional the natural reaction is to release the 'excess of water' through the shedding of tears.

Hence, water as an element relates to the emotions and the world of feelings. It is a passive, absorbing element; receptive and keenly perceptive. The energy of water is fluid, unshaped, lacking consistency in definition and structure, but remarkable in its ability to seep into inaccessible places and change its form - sometimes appearing as vaporous as steam, sometimes as cold and solid as ice. The use of the word cold when applied to this element could never imply that there is insensitivity to feelings or detachment from emotions, but that the energy is passive, not active. Water 'types' are not quickly stirred to heated debate or dynamic, self-assertive action. Their tendency is to wait, reflect, and absorb, responding to circumstances and remaining responsive to the needs of others and the changing demands of life's events.

In the water signs of Scorpio and Pisces we see a different expression of this energy. Scorpio symbolises the stillness of the murky depths, areas so deep and dark that no movement occurs without the disturbance of long-accumulated sediment. Pisces, associated with the linear flow of the river, suggests a more immediate response to collective movement, trends and ideals. Lacking the hardened shell of the other water types, Pisces signifies a sensitive energy, easily impressed upon by its immediate environment. But Cancer, taking its habitation on the shore of the ocean, and governed by the Moon, responds to the cyclic and rhythmic rise and fall of life's ebb and flow. This sign is known for its moodiness, so Cancerians can be up one day and down the next, responding to the joys and pains of the world in a pattern that can (superficially) seem to bear little relation to the immediate events around them.

Since Cancer finds its strength in instinctive, emotional responses, Cancerians are known for their remarkable psychic sensitivity, absorption of memories and receptiveness to emotional impressions. This is widely accepted as one of the most psychic signs of the zodiac and there is usually a marked interest in the occult, a vivid recollection of powerful dreams, and strong symbolic appreciation. But such an acute sensitivity to their physical and unconscious environment is a double-edged sword, and awareness of complex psychological factors that underlie apparently simple acts make it difficult for Cancerians to apply their will and foster their own self-interests unfettered by feelings of guilt and torn sympathies. This hesitancy and vulnerability to emotional impacts on themselves and others has given the sign a reputation for weakness, and a lack of ability to apply direct action to direct problems.

In addition, this sign is one that dislikes glares of publicity and is rarely comfortable at the centre of attention. Traditional descriptions of the sign depict it as 'dark' and nocturnal, lacking in vibrancy. The astronomical foundation for this is that the constellation Cancer is a particularly dark and dimly lit region of the sky. It has few distinguishable stars and is mainly notable for a nebulous, cloud-like cluster which ancient astronomers regarded as an area where energies were dissipated. The connection with the element of water and the rulership by the Moon reinforces the ancient foundation of this reputation. The water element relates to the phlegmatic humour, which seeks to retain its energies and inclines towards lethargy, while association with the Moon adds to the sense of inconstancy and irrational or unreasonable behaviour - or behaviour that seems strange when evaluated solely by reason or the rational faculties.

The more negative traits associated with this sign then, are physical weakness, lethargy bordering on laziness, a chaotic and unorganised application of methods (often the cause of associated sloppiness and untidiness in the home and dress), and a moodiness that is hard for others to relate to or fully understand. Cancer generally has a dislike of discipline, aptly symbolised by a creature that lacks an internal skeletal structure, but the Cancerian way of dealing with that is simply to avoid issues; there is little inclination towards rebellious acts or direct and open confrontations.

The symbolism of the celestial crab also gives an insight into the way that Cancerians move through life, react to situations and respond to problems. Cancer is one of the few constellations that rises backwards in the zodiac. The Sun's entry into Cancer occurs at the summer solstice - a term derived from the appearance of the Sun 'standing still' as it approaches this point. The creature itself, of course, is known for its sidewards gait. So the movement associated with Cancer is a strange one, revealing a sense of hesitancy, a sidewards approach to things, and an element of moving forwards whilst not looking squarely at what lies ahead. Despite the intuitive gift that this sign possesses, Cancer is not known as a sign of quick action or immediate response. Cancerians tend to vacillate before deciding on a course of action, and once that course is chosen, the logic that lies beneath it is often convoluted. Decisions are based upon reasoning that is neither obvious nor apparent to other people, but presenting a great skill for lateral thinking, for originating solutions to problems from angles that others have not discovered. When combined with Cancer's natural artistic flair and strongly developed imagination, this can offer advantages in careers such as marketing, where the creative exploration of unconventional approaches can be seen as a real talent.

The backwards gaze of the constellation is also symbolic of the Cancerian interest in the past, a trait that is emphasised by the Moon's rulership of the sign. This manifests on a personal and social level and Cancerians often have a keen interest in history, past cultures and traditions, as well as a high respect for personal history, genealogy, ancestral origins, nationalism, and a desire to preserve and protect family customs. Ruled by the Moon, Cancer relates to tribal instincts and ethnic origins, and there is often a clan-like attitude to one's own community and family structure. Cancerians make very caring parents, but they sometimes suffer from over-protection and 'clinginess' in domestic relationships, becoming too dependent on the need to preserve a tight-knit family unit and failing to recognise when it is appropriate to loosen the bonds. Of course, the function of the Moon is to nurture and protect the young, so maternal and paternal instincts run very strongly through this sign.

Cardinal signs are noted for being changeable, and Cancerians are certainly changeable in their day-to-day views, emotions, and opinions. But they find change in their environment and basic life-structure difficult to handle and have a deep need for security in personal relationships. They like to hold on tightly to what they value as near and dear to them. They make great partners for people who appreciate a caring and committed mate, and they enjoy the role of being domestic provider - catering to homely comforts, offering tasty and nourishing food and providing a secure and pleasant family environment. Theirs is a gentle, relaxing and delicate energy; they need warmth, intimacy and emotional closeness and would not be suited to partners that value emotional independence or are inclined towards sexual, spiritual or even intellectual freedom.

Although Cancer is not inherently a materialistic sign, the image of a vice-like grip in their great pinching claws refusing to let go of what they see as rightly theirs, does apply to their material interests as well as their emotional investments. The word crabby, which generally means moody but is also taken to mean 'tight with money', originates from the reputation of this sign, in a trait that was recognised in the earliest texts.

It is within the area of business relationships that the Cancerian is best able to apply the protection of the tough upper casing and let the head rule the heart. Cancerians make good investors and good business managers - what they lack in 'pizzazz' they more than make up for in persistence and tenacity. Often underrated because of the softness of their emotional natures, it has to be remembered that, as the sign of the solstice, Cancer is a cardinal sign that does not give its ground away easily. Their hesitancy to act on first impulse makes them resistant to glib, superficial deals; instead they will circle around all options, vacillating to and fro, before finally settling on the deal that feels right for them. When they do invest financially, it is with caution and shrewdness. When they feel that their real interests - emotional or material - are at stake, they will fight to the bitter end. The irony is the motivation that powers them. They are driven by the need to safe-guard their family and loved ones, they have no real interests in acquiring wealth purely for their own use, but as a legacy of security that they can pass on to others that they care about.

Cancer is a complex sign, capable of offering very different personas depending on the angle that you view them from. They are slow to form intimate relationships, yet unless a close emotional contact exists they are unlikely to expose the soft-underbelly that borders their vulnerable centre. Instead they will maintain a sense of detachment and what you will see from the outside is a hardened, impenetrable shell that gives no hint of where their true values lie.
